Lance, a friend has a high mileage Chevy pickup (350. AT) that exhibited the same problem and was fixed the same way. Can't remember if it was 7 or 8 pin, anyway, thought I'd relate that to you.

Had the EXACT same problem, swapped in a new module, and it worked a little longer, till it got warm too.
Did you ever manage to get the autopsy done? If not, since I have a 5yr warranty on the new module, I may disect the old one I previously thought was dead.
