I wanna Inject my Suzuki Intruder 1400 motorcycle but it is air (and oil techincally) cooled. It has an oil pressure sending unit but that is about it for sensors. What can I use and where should I mount it to monitor engine temperature. From what I gather, MS needs to know engine temperature to function correctly? The oil temperature will not be the same temperature as coolant so can I adjust what operating temp is?
As with most aircooled engines, if it were to overheat I would not get any warning light or alarm.
On my ACVW, I put the sensor in between two of the cylinders so it "reads" the cooling air. You could also thread it into the cooling fins on your head or put it in the oil sump.
Tony Bitz describes how he mounted a thermistor in a ring terminal -- very carefully -- and put the terminal under an intake stud. Engine was a Porsche 911. He chose to not use the oil temperature as it lags the engine temperature.
My ACVW will use a Bosch brass/blue plug CLT mounted in the head, a lot of stock castings have the boss, dormant in all our European carb equipped VW's. I dremmel spotfaced away the fins and then tapped a hole to M8. Iran adie down a generic Bosch CLT sensor (matches the defaults in EasyTherm). It will screw in. The temp/time curve is super smooth compared to air temp. Oil temp being unrealistic, I agree. I experimented with thermistors in the cooling air coming of the heads and cylinders and I saw a kink I thought worth avoiding. In the first few minutes of driving, thermistor temp will plummet to near ambient when RPM/fan speed (Bike speed?) increases. Airflow impacts heavy on coolant air temps. Half warm and idling again (First Stop-light?) air temps go high, gross error to disired warm-up time/temps. The stock VW temp sensor2 used in all L-jet and D-jet would be an excellent thermistor to use for any aircooled/CHT based warm-up. It can cope with extreme temps, It had to!!
A small (M4?) screw thread with a bolt and washer holding a bead against a casting near the sparkplug is all that is needed I suppose.
Interesting post as I'm looking for a engine temp sensor for my 911 I am converting to MS EFI via Triumph throttle bodies. Whereabouts did you obtain your temp sensor, which VW models are L-jet and D-jet? My VW knowledge stops at a MK2 Golf Gti 16v with K Jet! I just need to know where to aim in my local **********!
