My MS Config

Post by madman4 »

New post to explain you how I will establish the MS on my engine.

THE CAR:
66 Beetle, full steel (less Aronson decklid)

THE ENGINE:
The basis engine is a 2180, Fk8, S/E head, 48IDA.
Pulling good 162hp and best ET on 1/4mile is 12.806@167 (No glue one French strip).

I will use my V3.0 MS2 which is currently assembled on a 1600, equipped with all the hardware of a EFI Mexican ACD flat4 engine.

For my race engine I sought everywhere thottles with IDA pattern without any result.

I thus sought in many the throttle which equips the motor bikes nowadays.
Still I ran up has a wall…. Impossible to find bodies with 46mm + butterfly.

My choice it is related to the throttle bodies of 996 Ducati which have the characteristic to have 2 injectors per body.
A very good choice since after test it proves that the injectors make 270cc EACH!!!

But these bodies do not have that advantages, indeed, those are, of origin, to actuate by linkage. But their provisions on the large twin-cylinder is not appropriate at all for the VW engine compartment .

It has was necessary to me to find a solution.
I separated the bodies from their fixings and tried to place them on the IDA manifold.
While directing them not in line, I can place it but now it is the traditional linkage which is impossible to install.

I plane to use a throtle cable which will not be very easy has to develop but….

To help me to find a solution in the fixing of the bodies I reproduced those using a software of 3D and I drew flange single rather than a flange for 2 bodies.

The parts are being watercutted.

I would keep you informed of advanced of this assembly.

That's an ambitious project! Do you have the equipment to modify those watercut pieces for the bushings you'll need? I gotta see the throttle linkage you come up with too.
Have fun!

Unfortunately no.
But what bushing do you mean ?

This is what i plane to fix the bodies

You need a bushing for the throttle shaft, or does your set-up already have bushings in each side of the throttle bores?
Ever consider a single throttle body on a plenum and the injectors in the intake runners? It's easy and affordable. (It must be, that's how I did it. ) :)

Sorry I don't understand what bushing I need ...
The bodie are independant since I cut the linkage.

I cant use them on a straight line because the body of the car touch it.
(see the photo on the first post with the tbi in place on the motor)

Yes I already consider injector in manifold but I haven't acces to a AC TIG to weld on my aluminium manifold ...

Your description of the throttle shaft(s) now makes more snese tome. You don't need any more bushings.- sorry.
I bought the runners that I have. They were affordable and saved lots of time fabricating. I made my own fuel rails, but they can be purchased as well.
I found them here:

Yes I know the CB Perf casting.

But I'm running IDA on this motor before so I want to re-use the manifold.

I don't want to spend a lot of time to make porting again.

Would it take more time to port new runners or to modify those other TB's, fab a linkage, sync them, find some air filters that fit, and then tune them?
Sweet looking engine BTW. :D
Also liked the CAD models.- Awesome. I actually modeled my fuel rails before I made them. Nerds of a feather.....

Yes I know ...

May be the challenge .... :D

CAD must be prototyped, The theory is inseparable from practice.

But it's a wonderfull tool.

Cut in one piece, the "base" of the TBI

After cutting and adjustement

On the 2 pictures above you can see the height of TBI Vs IDA.
You don't need to change the manifold if you plane to raise the trans and go on EFI with this body.

This is (at x degree) how the body will be inclined
