MegaSquirt has been successfully used in all aspects of Internal Combustion engine applications including R&D, Industry, Race, and Research. The MS project has transformed itself from a simple R&D project into a full-featured mature engine control system. Ok, Has anyone had sucess using mre sensors with megasquirt. I have read that these sensors work like VR sensors but put out a square signal. More information can be found here: www.globaldensoproducts.com/em/gem/vctcs/camcrank.html
This seems like a much better option than flying magnet hall sensors or high voltage vr sensors.

Sounds interesting, but more operational spec's would be nice. Just as a note, it is commonly thought that Hall sensors need shutters or flying magnets, but that is only the non-biased type. Most of the ones used by MSers are the biased digital type and I much prefer them over other sensor types. They can read any ferrous toothed wheel just like a VR sensor, but give a sharp on/off square wave. No additional magnets required, and a very clean signal that has better noise immunity than typical VR setups. Many newer cars (1990s+) use them and are common in the wrecking yards. Just look for sensors with 3 wires rather than 2 on cranks, cams, transmissions, and wheel speed sensors.

Honestly what I am looking for is a square wave type sensor to fit in a distributor and read a trigger wheel. It seems to me that what you are talking about and what I was talking about may be the same thing. I read that these MRE sensors have 3 wires and produce a square wave signal. Do you have a part number?

For that you'll need a small sensor that can read small teeth. The ATS617 would be an example and is available through Digi-Key here. This sensor can be mounted by any imaginable method (right on a convenient surface with epoxy for example) and wired to MS using standard Hall sensor setup. Many have used these types over the years, and some pics of how myk777 did his recent setup are here.
