Turbo Type-4

Post by T4RAIL »

Hey everybody, another newb to this forum.
i currently have a sandrail running a 1700 type 4 out of a porsche 914. it runs with the stock FI system and a point eliminator kit that uses a haul effect pickup in the dizzy.
my plan now is to convert over to MS2, then once i get the basics figured out and it running again add a turbo. this is a 100% budget build, kind of an experiment to see what happens. if anyone has any words of advise about a turbo T4, let me know. i have read for hours about it but have 0 hands on experience.
right now the thing im a little confused on is the use of a wide band oxygen sensor. whats the cheapest and easiest way to go about setting one up. i wont be tuning on a dyno so this would be great, plus a data logging feature wold be nice.
im sure ill have a million more questions, but thats where im at for now.
thanks everyone.

For the wideband, you'll need a controller which converts the somewhat complicated output from the sensor into a simple 0-5 volt reading the MegaSquirt can understand. For example, we use Innovate LC-1s in most of our projects. These things wire up with their own harness, and they have a single wire you connect to the MegaSquirt's O2 sensor wire.

you might also check out the fuel injection forum over at shoptalkforums -- lots of good info putting MS on Type 3/4 motors, I've got a 1700 to rebuild (way down the road) - but a type 3 is first on the adjenda.

I went with the AEM UEGO - but most people here go with the innovate

next question, as long as i dont want to control timing (let the dist do that) can i have the MS run the coil and injectors just off the hall effect sensor thats already in the dist? it would be nice to ditch the second ignition box thats on it now.

Yes, you can do this - although on a turbo motor, you probably will want the MS controlling timing eventually.

There are a couple of folks that have 36-1 wheels built for the type 4's that fit behind the axial fan. Really slick installs, so you might want to look at EDIS. Again look at STF for type 4 conversions. If you want to keep the existing dizzy - you can get RPM off of the trigger points and not intoduce as much noise into the MS as using the coil-capacitor would.

I have been using the hall effect conversion you mention for years on my ACVW, without problems. The 36-1 wheels setup is great, but if your budget is really tight, then using your current setup is easily done. Go ahead and fab all the turbo plumbing and everything you plan to end up with. I would strongly recommend getting things running with the turbo wastegate wired open, and off of the stock ignition...if you feel comfortable changing to ms ignition control in the future, otherwise wire things up with MS controlling the spark too. It's not that difficult to get things running off of a hall sensor in the dizzy. I threw caution to the wind and dove in head first with fuel injection, ignition control, and E85, all of which have their own learning curves. This can be overwhelming and frustrating, but the support on these forums it top notch.
How many lbs of boost are you planning on running? I'll offer up my MSQ if you would like, but I'm running E85 and not gasoline, at 10 lbs of boost with a 8.25:1 CR.
