Help with the basics

Post by white96zq8 »

I bought a 350 chevy crate engine for my s10, and the truck is still being built I have been tossing around the idea of fuel injection for awhile now. The engine is originally set up for a carb, but the carb with the adapter plate is to high for my hood. I purchased a summit racing ignition combo that included an HEI distributor, and a igniton box, so im using that for ignition. Im undecided on an intake and throttle body at this point, Id like to get a rough idea of what this will cost. Im not sure if MS I or II is right for me, I dont really need MS to control timing so MS I would be ok handling the fuel. For sensors I will need a IAT, CTS, TPS, and a O2 sensors? Are there any other sensors I would need?

Thanks for any help!

What intake to use will depend on the rest of the engine. What RPM range is this one intended to run in? A TPI setup has a low profile works great if it's a low RPM motor and you're using the S10 to haul parts, but would run out of breath before 5000 RPM. If the S10 is just intended to flat-out haul, you may want to convert a carbed intake to EFI and use a low rise throttle body.

Correct on the sensors. MS doesn't need much to run the engine, as it's not designed for emissions.

Many GM intake setups use a stepper motor idle control, and so with an MS1 you would not be able to control that. It may not be a concern for you as you could simply adjust the idle speed screw till it doesn't stall when cold.

The engine I have makes peak hp at 5500 rpm and peak torque at 4400 rpm. I'd go with a tip intake, but like you said, there no good after 5000 rpm. The trucks main purpose will b a weekend driver, no towing. I'll either go with a carb style intake, or something like a holly stealth ram. Ive even been looking at the edelbrock pro flow intake. I have a dual plane intake on it now that I could have injector bosses machined in it but I should probably go with ansingle plane right?

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, at that RPM, I'd be thinking single plane. Stealth Rams are a bit on the tall side; they won't fit under a Corvette hood - but they're about the same height as a lot of normal four barrel intakes.

I'll explore my options with a single plane, I'll see how it will cost to have one drilled out and the injector bungs welded in or buy one ready to go. What do you recommend for throttle bodies? A square bore 4 barrel type, or an elbow going to a 90mm body? If I could id do the lt1 intake, but I have vortech heads. I was reading up on it, and the only reason I think I would need ms2 is for electric fans if I decided to run them. If I go with a carb intake, a stepper motor won't be a concern right? Also what kind of operating system does my computer need to be compatible with ms software?

I did a little research and I could do a edelbrock victor jr
Intake, and use a elbow adapter for a ls1 throttle body. I can score a ls1 throttle body on eBay with a tps sensor and ias motor for a good price. I'm not sure what to do about injectors, I'll get the fuel rail blanks and have the guy machining the intake do the fuel rail also. As of now I'm going to go with a mehanical fan so I don't think I'll need ms2.

You need ms2 if you want to use the GM idle air motor from the LS1.

The Edelbrock victor jr is what I am using with a Accufab square bore 4 barrel type throttle bodie.
Some chassis combos have hood clearance issues with the 90 elbow adapter.

To get a 4-barrel manifold converted is reportedly $3-400. For a SBC I think there will be ready-made manifolds available, and fuel rails, too.

Visit Summitracing and see what they have available.

Here is my swap im doing right now. http://www.v8s10.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=29063 Im using tbi but other alternitives are available. Holley has a 4 barrel tbi unit that boths to a holley flange. As far as intakes go Professional products has a single plane machined for injector bungs already for pre 85 heads as for vortecs check edelbrock and Professional products.

Tpis are good if you spend some money on the high flo runners and porting the base. Im looking into the setup myself for a mild daily driver.
