Need help with engine startup and idle

Post by FordTaurusGuy »

I am having a hard time comprehending the technical instruction on how to get my engine to start and idle properly. Maybe someone can explain it to me in simpler terms.

Here is what I have done:

I have followed the basic instruction on setting up TS to communicate with MS2. I have set my engine displacement, number of cylinders, injector size, calibrated TPS, ECT, IAT, and my LC-1 Wideband. My fuel pump does not prime when I turn on the key but it runs when I crank so I am not worried about that.

I am using 19lbs High-Impedance injectors. I have set the PWM Time Threshold to 25.4 and PWM Current Limit to 100% as per manual.

In the low-impedance section of the manual it says the Injector Open Time should match the PWM Time Threshold… Does that also apply to the HI injectors ?

Now I crank the engine, she bucks n kicks n grunts for a few attempts and then starts up, but only if my throttle position is at or above 40%. Nce she starts I rev her up a few times and let my foot off the accelerator, she then settles down to a clunky idle at about 800~1200RPM and a fuel load of 40~50%. At this point I can play around with the fuel tables and get her to idle at a AFR of 13.5 ~ 14.5 (according to my LC-1 gauge), and get the base ignition timing to match perfectly at 10 BTDC and a smoother idle.

If I knock her off I have to start all over again with her spluttering, bucking and causing a fuss.

What do I need to do to get her to start and idle properly? i have read the manual I just need it explained to me in simple terms.

Are you burning your settings after you get the idle mixture correct? Note the VE settings and see if they are the same after switching off and trying another start.

Yes I am burning the changes as I make them.

Assuming it's wired according to the manual, the pump not running for a couple of seconds at switch on needs investigating. Have you got a stim and does the LED on that show it to prime? If not, I'd reload the code. There is a new version just released.

Are you getting any warnings when you first load TS - or when it connects to MS?

No error codes. I am away from my car for the next week or so, I will double check when i get back.

I did get the stim and I will double check everything.

Thanks
