Cold start issue

Post by durson1 »

Engine is a 2.0L 8v. Audi 3a. Running MS2 V3 with 2.89 code. Running 19lb injectors, high impedence. I attached a log and msq of the issue. On a cold start at 55 or so degrees the engine starts right up then dies shortly after. It then starts right up and idles fine right after. The afterstart enrichment is currently 35%. I've tried moving it up to 40 and down to 30 with no change. I replaced the plugs, cap, and rotor to eliminate that. Checked fuel pressure. The problem is I only get 1 chance to see what effect the changes I make have, being that it only does it on a cold start, the first of the day. Its not my daily driver so I only drive it on the weekends. Anyone have any ideas?
You'll see on the second attempt I bump the throttle shortly after starting. Thats not to keep it running but to excite my alternator to get it charging. The first attempt the rpm's rise to 1800+ rpms which is enough to excite my alternator.

Everything looks good on this but your fuel is dropping (9 ms to 3 ms) as the MAP drops(95 to 46 kPa). This is good because the engine is catching and the vacuum shoots up, but you need more after start to make up for it. The msq shows a cold ASE of 25% and 20% for hot ASE. I would set the cold to about 50% and see what happens. Also increase the after start hot/ cold cycles.

Thanks. I'll try that. After a first attempt non start I pulled the plugs and they were dry. So I was thinking I needed more fuel.

I added more ASE, WUE, prime, and cranking. The prime and cranking to help wet the walls, and the WUE and ASE to keep it running afterstart. And it worked. Thanks for the help. Just after start the rpms rise to 1800 rpm's then fall to 900 ( where it use to die) then climb to the fast idle speed. I'll need to play with it a bit to get rid of that dip to 900 but it starts 1st time.
