computer crashing

For discussing Phil Tobin's TunerStudio MS is the MegaSquirt edition of TunerStudio, a next generation tuning application. It provides the ability to configure and tune all MegaSquirt controllers and is 100% compatible with MegaTune ini files and msq's.

computer crashing

Post by boosted 89 »

Hello Fellow MS'ers

I'm having an issue with my new(used)laptop and TunerStudio. I'm using a usb to serial adaptor to communicate with the controller and all seemed well until the computer crashes then reboots. It only happens when I'm connected to the controller and it sometimes will run for 5 minutes before this happens. I have read some earlier post with similar faults happening but usually the end result is either neither explained or not responded back. The Usb to serial adaptor is made by Dynex and its only 16 inches in length...luckily my controller is mounted in the glove box. Is there still a driver issue with prolific(turns out this usb to serial cable uses porlific) The version is 2.0. I can boot up tunerstudio offline and all is well. My older laptop has megatune installed and I still have it as backup but I've purchased tunerStudio and Megalog as a package and would really like to start tuning better. Any help would be fantastic.

I also noticed that in Local C windows\drivers32 there is a "ser2pl.sys" and a "SER9PL.SYS. would this cause anything having 2 prolific versions there . one is a 2.0.013(SER9PL.SYS)
and the other is a 2.0.018(ser2pl.sys) file
I've also posted the same senario in the Megatune section just in case it isn't just a TS issue

Your serual cable must use a Prolific chipset. There is a nasty bug in many of the drivers for that causing a hard crash. They did finally put out a driver that seens to work last year, it can sometimes be a pain to get the old one out.
Cables based on the FTDI chipset are preferred for windows.

I will attempt to remove the old driver and retest. I figured the new cable I bought last week would have the latest
driver but I'm not sure. I had to download the driver for this cable from the company because my laptop does not
have disc drive so I couldn't use their mini disc. If this doesn't fix this problem I may sell the laptop and get a similar
unit with the serial port. Unfortunetly when I purchased this laptop used , the specs said it had a serial port but found out after driving 2 hours to get it, the serial port connection was not there..just the hole for it..I didn't want to go home
empty handed so I bought it anyways thinking there was a way around it. Its a panasonic toughbook cf-18 tablet style. I'd hate to have to part with it.

No need for a new laptop.

The sure fire fix is an FTDI based cable like this one:

Do your cables require the driver disc to operate and if so is there another way to load the driver(laptop does not have disc drive) I will gladly purchase one of your cables if there is a download from the site for the driver.
