Wiring Ford TFI to MSII and Hall Effector Distributor

Post by kieranl »

Hi All.
Im just trying to hook up my ford TFI ignition and just working out where to hook all the 6 pins up from the TFI and also then how the hall effect sensor hooks into the circuit.
Im running a V3.0 PCB with MS II and have performed the TFI mod in step 65 i think it was.
In the diagram (as shown below) i am working out how it ties into the distributor ete. Where i think these wires go has also been worked out with the existing wiring harness.

-So #4 STRT, what does that mean, does that wire to the positive side of the distributor?
-#6 PIP, does this also have to have a connection to the neutral of my distributor?
-Where does the negative side of my distributor hook up too?

Ive also attached the original wiring diagram of how the TFI was hooked up on original car.
146 is the TFI and 38 is the distributor

Thanks,
Kieran

Kieran,

The STRT wire is connected to a battery voltage source which is active with ignition switch in the start (cranking) position.

PIP should be connected to DB37 pin 24 only. It should not be grounded.

The sensor inside the distributor hooks up to the 3 pins on other end of the module. These pins are:
- signal,
- power,
- ground,
starting from the pin closest to the 6 pin external connector.

All grounds (including any on the distributor, and all the MegaSquirt grounds) should be run to a single point on the engine block (ideally an easy to find, rust-free bolt or stud).

Hi Lance.
Thanks for your quick reply!

That makes sense with the STRT reference, i was/am just confused as the wiring diagram from the original car seems to have it differently.

Unfortunately my Ford TFI ignition system doesn't have the 3 additional pins on the other end of the module, it only has the 6 pin external connector on the main end of it. As per attached pic from the manual.

Any ideas why this would be different?

Much appreciated,

Kieran

Just a side note that i thought of, do i have to use the TFI? Is there a way i can just connect the hall distributor and coil etc up directly to the computer, bearing in mind i still want to be able to change timing etc?
