Transfer TS to another laptop.

Reason being, I've been using my "good" laptop (which is bereft of a serial port) for some time now, and decided the dropouts while running VEAL are just too annoying. My options are, try to find a reliable adaptor here in Oz, ( the one I've got is clearly susceptible to noise), or transfer my TS program (registered), along with all the projects and settings to my older machine, which has a proper serial port.
Is the transfer a problem? Or will I have to download and re-register?

Do you still have your registration number? If so just do a fresh install and use it on that. Worked here when I changed laptops. You can then just move the project etc files to the new installation. (I'm not sure if the licence is for single machine use)

However, it might just be easier to buy a USB to serial adaptor from an MS dealer - mine doesn't suffer from drop-outs when using VEAL

No problem installing a register TS to another Laptop owned by you, but I would just get a cable that is known work fine.

Ive had good success with PCMCIA 232 cards. worth a go for not much money

The ideal for me would be to get the proper adaptor. Trouble is, the only places I know to get one is in the US. The price is good, but postage is more than the unit price. And the 6-8 week wait (USPS) doesn't appeal much. If I can buy one here in Australia, then that would be ideal. I'm doing a long trip this week end, and the serial cable works on light operation, but has a tendency to drop out when I'm giving some throttle. (more noise from injectors and ignition, I'm guessing).
Any brands of adaptors which I can have more confidence in?

Understand, USPS Priority mail from US to AU is $18 USD and does still commonly take 3-4 weeks.

What to look for in a USB cable:

- You should have either an adapter with no USB cable, or well shielded cable
- If it does have a cable, the cable is best to be no more than 1m (3ft).
- An FTDI Chipset is recommended. Prolifics chips are also very common, but many of their windows drivers have a nasty bug that can cause a BSOD.

Generally you will need more than a 3ft cable, but for that you should use a traditional DB9 cable. These are typically 6ft long, when combined with a 3ft USB cable, you have 9ft of cable. If that isn't enough, you may want to consider using a Bluetooth to RS-232 adapter.

Went to several computer stores. The staff I got gave me the standard "this is all we have" line. I decided to re-install TS on my older laptop with com port. Went for a 45 minute drive running veal and not a single drop out. Went for another decent drive and took a data log. Registered my copy of MLV and had a good look at the log. Very impressed. Just need to get my head around l this new info (scatter charts). For now, though, I'm happy that I've managed to run VEAL long enough, and across a broader range of the fuel/load map to get the car running even better still.
