VW Throttle positioner motor/Idle control

Post by majic79 »

Hi peeps, looking for some help with a Small VW engine (1400cc 16V Inline 4 - code AFH) which uses a strange method of idle control - a small motor is built into the throttle body and the ECU modulates this somehow to control idle, and uses it's seperate throttle pot for feedback (some sort of closed loop system at a guess).

It sits on the same plug as the standard throttle pot, and is sprung loaded to return - my first thought was PWM control - however it can also drive itself closed (negative direction - at full negative there's almost no gap around the throttle plate at all) and the spring works both ways to return it to it's default position.

Hope someone can help me out, I have an outline diagram of the circuit if need be (from VW manuals!)
