4V 1000CFM Universal Throttle bodies - opinions

Post by RJ »

I know there are lots of options out there, I am in the process of building my first MPFI fuel injection system.

Wondering if you more experienced people have any opinions on what are some good options both in quality and price/performace perspectives.

-Thanks

I feel the 1000cfm TB's are way over priced and converted an old holley carb.Cheap and effective.

PS: Eliot did the same thing and bought a brand new carb to start with

Unless you are turboed with lots of horsepower, I'd run no more than a 750CFM converted carb body. Seen them in good shape at the swap meets for under $100.

A common mistake I think ppl make when converting a carb manifold to MPI is going too big on the runner size. For the street and reasonable RPM's you should use a dual plane style street manifold. Remember theres no more fuel in the manifold, and it flows a lot more dry.

Thanks for the idea on the carb, I hadn't thought of that so that might be an option.

As for HP I should be looking at ~475. I already have a monifold that was designed for MPFI.

If I where to run a carb on the engine, I would probably go with a 750 CFM carb. Looking at the charts I have seen elsewhere on the net, the 1000 CFM throttle body seems to be the correct size for what I am looking at.

Good tips on the manifold. Thanks

Is that 475HP at the wheels or at the crank? This is an all motor car? I'd think the 1000CFM might be a little big if that's a crank figure. I agree with the posts above about dual plane manifolds, they're great for the street. And if this is a forced induction application, things like single planes, long runners and shallow turns mean a whole lot less when you're feeding the motor compressed air...

Lance, I will be just about the same cubes as you. This will be on an AMC 401 block bored .020 over.

I am still in the early design stages for the EFI setup. Every over the counter system that does what I want it to do was 1500 bucks just for the computer (thinking Accel DFI Gen VII )

I would be intrested in hearing how you setup went, although the applications are different the engines are similiar in cubes.

What throttle body did you end up going with?

Here are a couple pics of the manifold I plan on running bare:

I purchased a BBK 1000 cfm throttle body. It includes a late gm style tps but you need to purchase the o-ringed iac motor. The throttle body is cast and kinda porous and the linkage sits over farther than I would like, but it was the cheapest performance throttle body I could find. I also previously purchased an Autonomics 750 cfm unit, which is the same unit sold by Accel/DFI, but it is a tbi unit that takes 4 port injectors and injects above the throttle plates.

I did see the BBK unit at http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... wordSearch

It is the only one I have found that is sub 400.00. Thanks for the input on it. :D

[Steps up onto soap box]

I sure wish Edelbrock would start making their Performer RPM AirGap manifolds with injector bosses. I hate it that they and Holley only put injector bosses on their single plane intakes. Don't they know that there many applications where a single plane isn't appropriate?

From what I understand you may soon get your wish if their single plane manifolds are successful. They said that the AMC would never be an application though...hahahaha.....jk.

That is OK. The only Jeep that still has a Jeep engine is the racer, and we have a nice EFI manifold for that already thanks to the factory. I need a manifold for my CJ - TPI will be OK for now, but it will choke the 383 that I have planned - and I need one for a Ford 460 that is in my motorhome.

Does anyone have a picture of the BBK throttle body? I just ordered one.

I know this is a very old thread - but I'm thinking that I'm not the only guy our there with this question...

I want to do a stealth MS TBI injection that sits under the air cleaner on my 67 Camaro. The engine is a 402 Big block but I think my question would hold true for a healthy small block as well - what are the TBI options?

In an ideal world, I'd like to just grab the TBI unit from the new MSD Atomic EFI system: 4 venturi that matches my 4 barrel carb manifold. 4 injectors so I can do primary/secondary staging, TPS sensor, IAC motor - and it all fits under a normal round air cleaner - hidden. Even has an integrated MAP sensor - but I won't need that for the MS.

Other choices - there seems to be only one available aftermarket TBI housing - this ACCEL at Summit for $385

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ACC-74135B/

The BBK 4V is still on the BBK website - but no longer at Summit:
It has a GM style TPS and is machined for a GM IAC - but has no provisions for injectors...
http://www.bbkperformance.com/products/ ... le-bodies/

Or the cheapest - is find a 2V GM TBI unit from a 7.4L Big block (2 x 2 inch bores) and adapt that to fit a 4V carb manifold with an adapter plate or spacer.
And even these are $300 on the used market....
OR... mod the 4V Holley Carb I have - but the machining required for the IAC and the injectors scares me....

Am I missing any other "easy" options???

thanks - long time listener, first time caller :D

The 454 TBI was meant for an engine in the low 200s for horsepower - two of them might be better for a built BBC.

Used Holley Pro-Jection throttle bodies are pretty cheap.

Thanks Matt

I will look for some Holley Projection TBIs on ebay and CL - it seems strange that people would sell just the TB and keep the rest... but I'll look

I only plan to make 350 HP out of a low compression 402 - 67 Camaro suspension and flexy flyer chassis is already scary...

I think that by the time you strip all the choke stuff and venturi booster rings out of a 750 Holley, you'll have more CFM than 750. Billk

I found a used ACCEL 74135B 4 barrel TBI with 38lb injectors and fuel rails on ebay for about $280 - but it needs a TPS and I gotta figure out how to wire the IAC motor. Does anyone know what kind of IACs and TPS sensors are used on these ACCEL/DFI Throttle bodies?

I am building a Megasquirt V2.2 ECU for it - not that it really matters...

thanks
