Optical triggering
Just a top of the head thought, probably been addressed before but i cant see it in the search.

An optical sensor isn't really suitable for out in the open as they will fail/false trigger with dirt etc. floating around. I think Hall effect sensors give a similar signal to an optical sensor, and aren't affected by dirt, oil etc so are more commonly used as a crank sensor.
