I need to buy a new TPS as the one in my Daihatsu Mira is switch type (stupid cost cutters). I unscrewed it from the stock throttle assembly to take a look, and the scrapyard TPS I had picked up had a completely different type of linkage. So I need to find a car that has a potentiometer type TPS that will mate with my throttle.

The stock throttle has a shaft sticking out of it with a D shape shaft (half moon). The shaft diameter seems to be 8mm measured at the thickest point and 6mm if I measure through the cut out portion. The two mounting screw holes are 180 degrees apart, forming a line with the TPS shaft, and are 4.5 cm apart. The junkyards are full of Daihatsu Miras with the same linkage, but of course they all have the same stupid switch type TPS.

I'm in Japan, so a Japanese make is preferable as those are much easier to find in junkyards, though at the moment I'd be willing to ship parts from the U.S. if I need to. This problem with the TPS is the only thing keeping me from starting up my Megasquirt, so please lend me a hand!

No TPS? You will still be able to start the motor without tps connected. It should be easy enough to cobble something together (eg, an adaptor) made from a Mira switch insides (the part that goes onto the shaft) and another and make up a piece to match a potentiometer tps you obtain easily. You will need to (no doubt) extend the mountings to fit all this in, but it should work OK. I did a similar thing to adapt a Ford tps to an Audi throttle body.

The Bosch unit will accept the 8mm D shaft - if you need the data sheet for the unit, let me know - I can post it. Also shown is a way to use a switch from Jim.

I am pretty sure that some of the Subaru's also used a D-shaft TPS. I am not sure about the shaft diameter there.

Thanks, Tony, that's exactly the info I was looking for! I will hunt the junkyards, I'm sure there are a couple lying around somewhere. And if not, I can order the part. I found a link to the data sheet for Bosch part 0 280 122 001, so here it is if anyone else finds this thread later:

I thought about just leaving out the TPS completely, but part of my reason for gutting the stock ECU functionality is to get a smoother acceleration than the stock switch based control. As for ripping apart the stock TPS, my skill set goes more along the lines of electrical engineering and less toward shop work... Although I have some shop-inclined buddies, if I can find a matching stock TPS it'll be watertight, which with the stock hood scoop is critical. I don't think potentiometers and water play well together...
