my engine is air cooled, is there any option for the coolant sensor?

most people either use cylinder head temp (CHT) or oil temp. VW used CHT on their early EFI (I have a couple of CPU's from 69-72) -- On the engine I just stripped the CHT also had an oil passage up to it..

I mounted a coolant sensor to the tins about 1/4" from the fins on the cylinder #2 (VW). Works fine, although I did adjust the various tables to that the engine is warmed up at 120 degrees.

I mounted my sensor inline with the external oil cooler and just modified the tables for the range I wanted.

I modified the MS so that I could use the temperature range reported by my head-temp sensor on my aircooled engine (vw bus). I think this is the most reliable and responsive method.

Using the coolant sensor can be problematic, especially on warm-starts. If you have it under the engine, the sensor will cool down but the engine will stay hot. In the case of the vw bus (and other l-jet setups), I think there's a good reason that the cold-start sensor is right above the case and the EFI head-temp sensor is mounted on the heads.
