Clicking sound coming from MS board.

Hello and thanks for taking your time to read this post.
I build an ms-II V3.0 about five years ago and used it to run the ignition system on a dodge 360 for several years without incident. It then sat on a shelf until recently I've used it to power a fuel only, coil negative triggered mpfi setup on a dodge 2.2 liter. And yes I followed the assembly guide to the letter about placing the zener diode etc etc).
It worked fine for a month or so, but a worrying clicking sound was coming from the board that corresponded with (I think) the tach input.
Now it's dead(ish) and I have a brand new MSII V3.57 to replace it (jumpered to bring in the signal on the opto-isolator).
The clicking sound is still there and I'm quite wary. Is this normal or horribly wrong?
Should I just give up on coil neg triggering and fabricate a crank wheel?
Any feedback is welcomed, and thanks again.
