I've got a Triumph Spitfire 1.3L engine with Ford EDIS ignition and MS-II v3 running 2.90x firmware and standard B&G code.

I want to install an evaporative emission system to cut down the stink when the car is stored in a closed, attached garage. I need to control the canister purge valve with the MS unit. I plan to do this with one of the spare ports through a relay. The trigger criteria I think I need are coolant temp > 150 and TPS > 40. The evaporative canister and purge valve from a 1994 Ford Escort look like promising parts to incorporate.

My questions are:

Has anyone actually installed an EVAP emission system and how did it work out?

Are the trigger criteria close to what is needed or do they need to be adjusted?

Are there possibly better components to install to make this thing work?

I've gone ahead and installed the system. The cansiter and purge valve were from a 1993 Ford Escort (1.9L engine). To control the purge valve, I used one of the spare ports to trigger a relay. The documentation indicated that the spare ports could handle a current of 0.5 amp or less. The relay I used draws 0.16 amp, so there should be plenty of margin. The trigger criteria I used were Coolant > 160 AND TPS > 25(%).

From what I could find out, the purge valve is only supposed to be triggered occasionally. Other cars use multiple criteria (I've seen up to 8 ) to determine when to open the purge valve. The TPS seemed to be a good substitute for engine load. In practice, the valve triggers when accelerating. It does not come on under 'steady state' conditions. The only time it is close to activating is when I am cruising above 70 mph.

The engine does not stumble when the valve opens or closes. So far, after driving about 400 miles, the system seems to be functioning. There may be better ways to do this, but this seemed to be quick and simple.
