Converting an '92 Audi 5cyl 2.3 to MS EFI

Hello

Im Danny, Im 24 years old and I live in the little country of Belgium, so excuse me for my weird choise of words sometimes.
I have posted a thread about converting a 4 cyl Audi engine to MS about a year ago, which didnt work out as I couldnt find a good intake manifold with usable injectors.
I got great help from the forum members here, which I really appreciate.

Now I have bought myself an Audi 80 with a 2.3 5 cylinder engine (code NG). It uses the KE III Jetronic fuel injection system.
I managed to get my hands on a complete Turbocharger, turbo exhaust manifold, wastegate, oil lines etc from an Audi 200. All parts exept the injection system.

My plan is to get rid of the old KE III Jetronic fuel system and swap the old injectors for new (bosch) ones.
Since Im fitting the turbo, I was wondering which MegaSquirt system I should buy, and if there are any other parts I need to fit to get it running?
I am a complete newbie at the "new" direct injection system. I can run carbs on almost any engine but EFI, not a chance.
So Im hoping anyone can help me out here?

Biggest question - what's triggering the ignition? A 5 tooth shutter wheel in the distributor, a sensor that counts flywheel teeth, or what?

The ignition is controlled by a 5 point dizzy, and the timing is controlled by the K-Jet system unfortunately.
Im affraid if I swap the K-Jet for other injectors, the ignition wont be on point anymore.

That ignition is very straightforward to control - distributor control with one tooth per cylinder has been around in MegaSquirt for longer than any other ignitionc ontrol.

Thanks for helping me out.
I have used the search function many times but I just cant seem to find the information I need...

So that means I have to place a missing tooth sensor on the crankshaft? Do you know of any sensors that are "direct fit"?
Will I need 5 direct ignition coils to place directly on top of the plugs? I can get my hands on some '04 Lexus IS200 coils, I dont know if they are suitable?

Danny

No, just wire the Hall sensor in the distributor to the MegaSquirt's RPM input on pin 24, and follow the documentation for Hall effect sensors.

So all I have to do is cut the wires going to the distributor, and connect them to the MS ECU? The MS has to control (spark) the stock coil if im correct?
Is MS able to control the timing at each rpm?

I have done some reasearch and i appologise for asking questions that are asked at least 1000 times before.
One thing I cannot find, Can i run full sequential on a 5 cylinder?
I read that u can only run full sequential on a 2 cylinder, as there are only 2 injector drivers.

You need MS3X for sequential - it has 8 injector drivers.

If you intend using the KE injectors, you'll need to check - I think it used low impedance types. So you will need to use series resistors with these and MS3.

You'll also need to modify your distributor to provide a cam position signal, as well as fitting a crank trigger wheel.

For the MS3 - or other ways of doing sequential - you'll need MS Extra code. This is covered on a different forum - link to it at the top of this page.

Comments from the peanut gallery - you don't NEED the MS3X expansion card, but it does make this sort of thing easier. You do need the MS3 processor card, with its up-to-12 injection channels.

Ah - of course. Isn't there also a peak and hold driver board available which can be used with lo-z injectors and no resistors?

Yes; jbperf makes a 4-channel P&H board, so the OP would need 2. No messing with resistors, no futzing with PWM current-limiting settings. "I just turn the key, and it goes!"

More info on the MS3 can be found here. Any questions, ask away over on the 'Extra forum. Come to the Dark Side - we have cookies!
