HEGO sensors from ford

Can i use the original HEGO sensors from a 5.0 ford motor. Do they always send a signal back to the ecu or are they only good for warmup?.
I ask this as a freind is telling me that they are only good for warmup and stop working when car is been drivin. Or am i better just buying 2 wideband sensors ...
