New here with an Olds 350 and questions

Post by The Stickman »

Ok I am new here and to MegaSpuirt so please be gentle. I have an Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser that I am doing up Pro-Touring style. I am going to EFI and have some parts ammased. I am running an Olds 350 and will be using an Edelbrock Performer RPM for the conversion(the one on the left)

I have a Billet 4 barrel style TB.

Now I have an MSD Pro-Billet Distributor magnetic trigger mechanical advance that I would like to use.

Now those are the parts I have. I will have the intake sent off to have injector bungs welded on and injectors and fuel rails mounted. My questions are which is the best MS unit for me? And options I may need? Keep in mind I am considering twin turbos. I also need to know if this distributor will work with the MS unit and if so can the MS unit adjust timing on this distributor? I also have both an MSD 6AL and 7AL-2 that need rebuilding. Would it benefit me to have them rebuilt to use on this set-up? Also a general question is should I run aluminum or stainless steel lines from the tank. Not sure I would want to run braided hose all the way from the tank. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

As regards the ignition, it makes sense to dispense with any mechanical advance, as this has always been flakey to say the least. If you wish to retain the distributor, the easy way is to lock up the advance mechanism and dispense with the vacuum unit if fitted, and simply use it as a trigger for the MS and to switch the HT to the plugs.
My Rover V-8 was fitted with an expensive Mallory aftermarket unit, so I sold that and modified a standard dizzy. That had a VR sensor, but after experimenting with that, I made up a hall effect unit which IMHO gives a more stable trigger. Being able to easily change the ignition map is a very real benifit - especially with a modified engine. The results are well worth the effort. Mine is better in every way than with the standard setup.

I'd probably go with an MS2 at this point, a V3.0 if you're building it yourself or a V3.57 if buying an assembled one.
And options I may need?
A relay board would be a good idea as it puts all the EFI relays and fuses in a convenient module, though this is your call.
Keep in mind I am considering twin turbos.
The standard MAP sensor can work for up to 21 psi of boost; above that, you'd want an upgraded MAP sensor.
I also need to know if this distributor will work with the MS unit and if so can the MS unit adjust timing on this distributor?
Yes. You'd lock the timing out, wire the pick-up to the MS, then wire the MS to the coil or ignition box.
I also have both an MSD 6AL and 7AL-2 that need rebuilding. Would it benefit me to have them rebuilt to use on this set-up?
Yes, particularly with twin turbos. The MegaSquirt can drive a coil but it's roughly equivalent to a fairly hot OEM HEI setup. The other option would be to run an EDIS-8 ignition or similar distributorless setup; these are in the same spark energy category as a 6AL.
Also a general question is should I run aluminum or stainless steel lines from the tank. Not sure I would want to run braided hose all the way from the tank. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Either one. Aluminum needs to be supported at more points to avoid metal fatigue.
