Sorry but I'm getting nowhere....

Post by Mark-the-spark »

Hi, I run an educational motor vehicle program, we have been asked to construct a mega-squirt set-up on a Jaguar X300 engine. We liked the idea of running this as a project that the more capable boys could dip in and out of as it progresses. The engine will be run up on the bench, but we have also been asked if we could develop systems for the Jaguar XK engine (with series 3 fuel injection) and also the XJ40. We have have been offered these projects by a local Jag man, but it would be great to show the students engine management systems.

I'm new to Mega-squirt, but understand that it is available in kit form, which would be ideal for us.

I'm having problems locating a supplier in the UK... I only seem to be able to find people who want to sell me a finished product. But to get full value for the program it's the kit I need... of possibly the PCB and any exclusive components... Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks Mark

http://www.megasquirtuk.co.uk/ supply kits. Or you can import kits from http://www.DIYAutoTune.com in the US. You will have to pay import duty and VAT - but it is still cheaper than buying a ready made one in the UK. Building it yourself helps understand how it works. But you could also buy secondhand from Ebay etc. Sadly, you can't just buy the PCB etc and populate it yourself. :D

Converting an XJ6 Series III to MS should be extremely successful - I have the same Lucas flapper injection on my Rover SD1 and have converted that to MS. I'm surprised your local Jag person hasn't heard of this being done before. Later models have more sophisticated injection as standard, so perhaps won't give the same gains with MS.

Thanks for the advise on where to look for kits.

Given the similarity with your Rover, could you advise how you arrived at the correct version of the Mega-squirt ECU's... is the variance down to advances in technology? I suppose I'm asking would any model suit my application?

I went for the best one I could build myself - which is the MS2 V3. Any later than that are factory made surface mount - not so clever for repair or modification.
There are two distinct routes - this one using B&G code, and Extra Code. Extra does allow far more complex configuration - but also is more complicated to set up. There are several FAQs that will let you decide what you want - look at DIY Autotune and ExtraEFI. ExtraEFI is a UK company.

If all you want to do on the Jag is effectively replace the Lucas ECU, an MS1 V2.2 will be fine. If you want to control the ignition too and have the possibility of even more, the V3 is a better bet.
