ms1 v3.0 conflicting info on points??

Post by clutchkith »

I'm building an old unit purchased in 06' from glens garage. It's a v3.0 mc68hc908gp32cp ms1. I planned on a 2.3 xr4ti build but sold it years ago. Now laying around I decided to assemble it for a cb 450 Honda twin with points. So my question is in mega Manuel.com / ms2/v3.0assemble.htm step 50 iv. Requires 22v or 24v instead of D2 but not available instead I used d4 with the same part number required. But in Vii. And viii. Steps it requires install of c30 and c12 which is not advised in the wiring diagram or from other research I have found on here. So install or not? I'm thinking about switching away from points because of this.

You're mixing and matching two different triggering methods. There's 'coil negative', where the flyback pulse of the coil field collapse drives the MS; this is the one with the heavy Zener diode and the capacitors. This is assembly step 50b.

There is also the option of triggering off the 'points', where the MS tach wire is not connected directly to the coil, but to the points; the points are NOT connected to the coil, as the MS internal coil driver actually fires the spark. This is assembly step 50a.

Thanks for the reply. After taking a step back from it and returning later I think I figured it out. I was combining both steps. Im going to use the points for timing, so I should use the trigger mode with the c30 and c12 installed and the larger diode. b

Read those sections again - points for signal, no coil spike, does not use the 24v Zener.
