Is there a way of determining the polarity of an EDIS VR sensor? Or is it just a question of trying it both ways? I have a 'scope.

Yes, You will have to try it both ways.

There is a pretty simple way that has served me well. You need a DVM set to 200 mV DC or a scope.
Connect the instrument to the VR sensor . Take a piece of soft iron and and let that sit on the sensor end.
Pull the iron off as fast as you can. The instrument shall swing towards a negative voltage , if not reverse the test
leads and repeat. The positive lead of the instrument that shows a negative deflection when pulling the piece of iron off
is now connected to the VR+ polarity as defined in EDIS parlance.

The sensor I'm using is I believe a Ford one, and one of the two terminals is marked 1 - the other no marking. I've seen two two circuits using it - and they are different. ;-)

For a Ford EDIS install you should definitely use a FORD VR sensor. FORD EDIS VRsensors come in many different shapes and use different contacts, but as far as I have managed to suss out, they are all electrically the same.

The one I'm interested in fits a custom made bracket for the Rover V8 - but I've seen conflicting reports on how it's wired. Everyone says just try it both ways, but I'm not like most. ;-)

I tried your test. I have another VR sensor which came with plug and pigtails in the Ford colours - blue and grey - so I had a 'control'. And I'm delighted to say the results were conclusive, so thanks again. This is the sensor I'm talking about:-

hellou, i have also fords vr sensor nad have a question. is there any chance, that i have bad configuration (falling-rising edge) and by ajusting the potentiometrs r52 and r56 ai made it working? there is something in megamanual about these potentiometers, that they shuold be turned counterclockwise, but when i do this my car won't work and i have loss sync all the time... my frind said turn it one time right it should be all ok, but i had tuo turn it abou 6 times to be wright. how can i check if i made a mistake?? my sensor is mounted on the engine, so i can't get it out. it's to much work... shoul i cranc the engine and measure it with the DVM?? after disconnectingfrom the ecu?/ i have MS II pcb v3.0 .
