I everyone i have an 88 mitsubishi montero that came factory with a 4 cylinder 2.6 but the engine was replaced with a 2.4 from a dodge ram from 1990 and is using the stock 2.6 distributor. I bought megasquirt 2 version 3 and built it to use the ignition module from inside the megasquirt but the problem is that the pickup coil and ignition module from the distributor is built into one piece. How do i go as to using this for ignition timing in the megasquirt. There are only to wire that go into the disributor one is 12 volts witch on the pick up coil/module says letter "B" and the other lead went to the negative side of the coil and says the letter "C".

Can i just use the lead that says "C" to run in pin 24 from the megasquirt and the one with letter "B" to a 12 volt supply and pin 36 in megasquirt to the negative side of the coil? Will i have to change any thing inside the megasquirt?

If you want to control the ignition timing, it might be easier to just switch to a crank trigger and direct coil control.

You'd need to fabricate up a crank trigger and sensor if you go that route. We carry trigger wheels and sensors, but you'll need to find a way to mount the wheel and fab up a sensor bracket.

I don't want to go the route cause this is for a 4x4 montero and it is going to see alot of mud and water. The other day i busted open the pickup coil/ignition module and removed the module and soldered the pickup leads to the terminals on the out side i still can not get any spark or rpm, i measured the pickup coils resistance and got 3 ohms is this alright? Will i have to ajust the pots inside the ms to see if i get a signal cause i put the megstim on and i get rpm and everyting works great...

A crank trigger can work underwater. You should see some of the shots of what the Land Rover guys are doing with crank triggered EDIS ignitions. With no distributor to get wet - they've been bolting the MS to the underside of the roof, and some of the pictures they've posted

Ok i understand that it can work underwater now but i don't want to invest in nothing more. I also have the ms 2 in the roof where the sun visor is, its pretty cool there. I will see if i can get a pickup coil from a Mitsubishi tredia to mount to the inside if the dizzy

It runs!!!

If there is someone else trying this on a first gen montero and get no luck starting it you will have to ditch the factory ignition module/pickup coil unit in the distributor. I am a HONDA owner and had a spare pickup coil unit for an 88 acura integra witch is apart from the dizzy and mounted it to the monteros cam gear. It was the easiest thing ever to do, you can not mix any pickup coil to any reluctor they have to be the same spacing on the reluctor wheel. We first tried to run a Honda pickup coil inside the montero dizzy with the stock 2.6 reluctor wheel and got nothing. This is why i was told it is very important to match the two together

When I was experimenting with a dizzy triggered system, I had an old Range Rover unit which fits my engine. I removed the advance mechanism and locked it. The original had a VR trigger with amp on the side of the dizzy. Removed those too, and fitted a Hall Effect gear sensor - about the size of a small transistor - to the frame of the VR sensor. Worked beautifully using the original trigger ring and gave a simple on/off 12 volt signal. Cost about $5 from DigiKey. Could put up a pic if it helps.
