MSII Reburn firmware failure

MSII with 2.905 in a 280zx turbo newly converted to EDIS.

It started after the initial install after correcting an unknown issue with the tach signal. Might have actually been the shielded cable?

After having many issues with this installation and controller I thought it would be a good idea to reburn this MSII controller with 2.905 which it already had been running.

It keeps failing early in the verification process. Usually at 2% or 4% but once in a while will get to 14%.

This is using a rs232 serial cable and the downloader with the latest code files saved in the downloads folder. Also tried other locations for these files like in the firmware folder in Megasquirt folder with the same result.

Although I have had success in the past I also tried the bluetooth with my newer laptop but it does not want to connect to the controller. The downloader accepts the bluetooth connection but is not waking up the controller.

I read that failure during verification can be due to the laptop keeping the controller in bootloader mode but haven't figured out how to remedy.

Connecting the serial cable after starting the downloader and/or cycling power to the controller makes no difference.

Most of the info on this topic seems to be in the Extra forums which uses a different process than the downloader.

Any suggestions?
