Variable valve technology

I have been searching to see if I could use a motor, GM LE5 that has Variable Valve Timing. This is going to go in a boat, nothing fancy. If the MegaSquirt will control the timing good, if not does anyone know if I can just ignore the timing and it will default to ?

This is a inline 4. If I know I can control or ignore the valve timing then I have a lot more options for motors.

I am a total noob and you have to start somewhere! Thank you in advance.

On / off VVT can be run off an MS2 spare output:

Controlling continuously variable valve timing would require an MS3, which is covered separately on the MSExtra.com forum.
