95 vw jetta crank trigger VR or Hall???? help?

our crank trigger is 95 vw jetta 2.0
Its got 3 wires black (which from vw wiring diagram I confirm is ground - the easy one!)
red
green

Can anyone suggest if this is hall or vr?
Vw manual states "500-600 ohms" as the only test for function
Does this have to get power applied for use or what?

thanks!!!

derekp,

500-600 Ohms is indicating the resistance in Ohms for a VR sensor's winding. A Hall sensor would not be tested by measuring the resistance, so it's a VR sensor.

The three wires are VR+, VR- and a shield (usually only connected at one end).

There is much more here: http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/pickups.htm#vr
