Can I replace SP232AEP with MAX232?

Hi,

I screwed up installing the SP232AEP chip to my megasquirt (soldered it in the wrong way round) and had to sacrifice the chip to avoid heat-damaging the board when sucking it out.

I understand this chip is a replacement for the MAX232. I can get a MAX232 cheaply from my local supplier. Will this work exactly the same?

If so, which variant should I get - IN/N/NG4/CPE+?

Cheers.

An example of why I advocate using sockets for all of the IC's! (Regardless of any advertised MTBF!)

Indeed. Did think it a bit odd that the kit came with only a socket for the CPU.

Anyhow, I did a bit of research and it looks like the best replacement available to me will be a MAX3232, since it will work with the 100nF bootstrap caps in the megasuqirt. Looks functionally identical to the other one, so hopefully it'll be OK. I'll fit a socket this time too :D
