Re: Evaporative Emission System Control

I've gone ahead and installed the system. The cansiter and purge valve were from a 1993 Ford Escort (1.9L engine). To control the purge valve, I used one of the spare ports to trigger a relay. The documentation indicated that the spare ports could handle a current of 0.5 amp or less. The relay I ...

Evaporative Emission System Control

I've got a Triumph Spitfire 1.3L engine with Ford EDIS ignition and MS-II v3 running 2.90x firmware and standard B&G code.

I want to install an evaporative emission system to cut down the stink when the car is stored in a closed, attached garage. I need to control the canister purge valve with the ...

Re: Suddenly Running Lean

Thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately for the diagnostic process, I did everything you suggested EXCEPT using an inductive timing light. That is how I ultimately found the problem. Should have done that first.

Thanks, again

Re: Suddenly Running Lean

This is just to give some "closure" to this thread. I (think I) FINALLY figured out what was causing the engine problems. It turned out to be a loose wire in the plug connecting the coil pack to the EDIS unit. This wire controlled the firing of the plugs in cylinders 1 and 4 and basically they were ...

Re: Suddenly Running Lean

According to the fuel pressure gauge installed in the fuel line, the pressure is 35 psi. The 30-40 range came from the manual for the engine ( Ford Escort 1.9 L) which provided the parts for the installation. As near as I can tell, this is the way things have always been.

Just to add a bit more, I ...

Re: Suddenly Running Lean

The story continues: I got the fuel leak at the rail corrected, but the engine is still running lean. The fuel pressure is actually supposed to be 30 - 40 psi with the engine running and it is. However, the engine still is not running correctly, with a lack of power and AFR of 19 or more.

I did get ...

Re: Suddenly Running Lean

Unfortunately, I did not get a log file, and now the fuel line is apart. I'll certainly get a log if the problem persists when I get the line repaired.

Suddenly Running Lean

Well, I've got an interesting problem. The car has been running great until this afternoon. It suddenly lost power and while it continued to run, it ran very roughly. When I was able to look at things in TS, it showed that the AFR was over 19 at idle and really didn't change much when the engine was ...

Re: Idle Speed Increases when Engine Is Warm

Thanks for the suggestion DonTZ125:

Right now, I've got the IAC set to shut down at 160 deg F. (I use the Ford PWM with 100% being "off".) I can set this to close earlier and probably increase the WUE to compensate a bit if necessary.

I am a bit puzzled though since the engine is warmer than 160 ...

Idle Speed Increases when Engine Is Warm

I've got a 1.3L Triumph Spitfire engine running with MS-II, V3 and Ford EDIS ignition. This setup has been running very well for a couple of years now. It starts well, both hot and cold, has no hesitations on addition of throttle, and even delivers reasonable gas mileage.

My question is this: When ...

Re: Engine Pulsing at Idle

Thanks for the help, Matt. Sorry to take so long to respond, but life intruded on my fun stuff for a couple of days.

I've tried your suggestions and the idle is much steadier now, at about 1200 rpm. I'd like it to be a bit lower, in the 800-1000 range, so I need to play with it some more.

Thanks ...

Engine Pulsing at Idle

I have a MS-II V3.0 running fuel and ignition. It has been running fine, but today has displayed a problem. At idle, the RPM pulses from about 900 up to about 1700 over a second or so, then it drops back and repeats. Up until now, the idle would pulse a bit around 1000 RPM, but not this pronounced ...

Re: AMC Update Indicator

Just for the sake of completeness, this is the reply I received to my PM to Philip Tobin on this subject:

Hi Bill,
I actually could not tell what the output values for amcUpdate are. I would assume by the name as you have that it is related, but I have never used AMC on a car. I generally use ...

AMC Update Indicator

I'm curious if anyone has used one of the spare ports to light an indicator light when Automatic Mixture Control makes a flash update?

I've got a couple of LEDs on the dash wired to spare ports 4 & 5. There is a variable "amcUpdates" that can have a condition set to trigger something, but I have ...

Re: Problems getting it to start & idle

I've now got the car so it will idle smoothly at about 650 rpm with no additional throttle movement required. The cold start still requires a bit of additional throttle to keep it running, so I may have too much WUE set in. Once it warms up, it idles nicely and re-starts quickly.

At idle, the AFR ...

Re: Problems getting it to start & idle

Thanks, Lance. Right now the VE table is whatever Tuners Studio made it when I downloaded the program. I've attached a copy of the current tune. I've been playing with the warm-up enrichment and the PWM idle control, so those tables look a bit weird. Those changes have not had much effect, and this ...

Re: Problems getting it to start & idle

There is some progress to report. Following Lance's suggestion, I made SURE all the connections to the intake manifold were tight. Checking the Chilton manual for the Escort engine reveled that the fuel pressure regulator should maintain operating pressure for at least a minute after the fuel pump ...

Re: Problems getting it to start & idle

Thanks, Lance. It's odd you should mention a vacuum leak. When I first attempted to start the engine, I could get it to run briefly at about 500-550 rpm, a nice idle speed, but the AFR would rise up to about 16, at which point the engine would die.

I snugged up the bolts holding the intake manifold ...

Re: Problems getting it to start & idle

OK, I've solved part of my problem. I had the WUE configured to go below 100%, which was probably why the engine died. When I fixed that, it now stays running, although still at 5K+. I've attached a copy of the latest tune configuration.

Problems getting it to start & idle

I have a 1.3L Triumph Spitfire engine with MS-II V3, Ford EDIS ignition, 14# injectors and a Ford Escort (1.9L) throttle body with PWM for IAC.

The car has run with the MS-II controlling the ignition only, and now I have added a 4 port injection manifold to do the fuel side.

This is my first ...
