Looking for TPS suggestions

Post by dstaley »

Hi guys,
I'm starting my first EFI build so I'm very weak on resources. Would you mind getting me going in the right direction?

I have a 409 smallblock chevy and a tunnel ram intake. I have a marine plenum with it but it doesn't have some basic provisions on the throttle body (IAC, TPS, throttle return spring, throttle cable wheel, etc), so I'm considering cutting it off and installing a flange for a bolt-on throttle body that would hopefully include all this.

I should be able to make 490-500 flywheel HP with the engine. It's a street driven C3 with an automatic transmission, 6000 RPM redline, not sure what other information is helpful. It's running 12's with a quadrajet and a flat tappet cam, roller cam & EFI conversion is planned for when the weather warms up. I'll be running 38-40 lb/hr injectors at about 38 PSI to get started.

What size TB should I be using?
Is there an OEM one that I should consider?

Suggestions?

That's going to take a big throttle body - either a single 95 mm unit, or one of the four barrel style ones. There's a lot of aftermarket 1000 cfm four barrel type throttle bodies that would be fine to use on this build. Not too many production cars have throttle bodies this big, but IIRC the Infiniti Q45 has a single 95 mm throttle you could use.

Thank you for your reply! I have GOT to figure out how to get notified when my threads get replies...

I found mentions of the Q45 throttle body on this forum, but I think I found that it's a 90 or 95mm outside diameter, with something like an 80mm internal diameter- does that sound right?

If so, the other options I found are the Edelbrock Pro Flo XT throttle body, complete with provisions for fixed and stepper idle air control, throttle position sensor, return spring, cable actuation, etc. for about $260 plus sensors/IAC (which I have on hand, assuming these parts are compatible). Wilson manifolds makes one I've seen available used, and one or two other aftermarket ones. Am I on the right track?

I guess the advantage of being on bedrest for a few days is I have a lot of time to surf the web...

Guess a true factory 95 mm throttle body was too good to be true, but there are plenty of aftermarket options in that size.
