Shadow Logger MS for Android

Post by LT401Vette »

Shadow Logger MS, a data logger for a modern mobile device that support all MegaSquirt Firmwares. Shadow Logger MS is ready for broad based beta testing. so feel free to download and install it during beta testing. As Bluetooth does carry some inherent problems in providing slower read rates and complexity of setup, the focus for this version has been functionality over flash. It it is solid and simple to use, The flash will come soon :).
- broad support
- read rate
- Data Access, simple place to get your log files
- Support for all firmwares

I should add that it does include the Accelerometer data from your phone too, and includes that in the log files.

You will need a Bluetooth to RS232 Adapter. I have tested many different adapters and found they do behave differently. Some have poorer read rates, short range, some have hoops to jump through before it connects. When I found one that worked well, I picked up a bulk purchase of them so I could pre-configure them to work straight off and pass them on. This connects quickly, has good range and the best 115200 data rate out of any I have tested.
If you already know your way around blue tooth adapters or have one you use now, great that should work here. If you need one, I would suggest this as my first choice:
https://www.efianalytics.com/products/c ... tooth.html

Once connected, it should be pretty straight forward. Shadow logger MS is integrated with a new site i have put up ShadowTuner.com. ShadowTuner.com provides for easier access to your log files and allows you to share your logs or view others that people have shared.
Be patient with this site, I still do not have nearly all the functionality I have planned and do not yet know what I need for hardware and bandwidth. So, during this beta phase I am hoping to learn more. :)

For all Android owners, please go ahead and try it out. I welcome feed back and want to work through any issues before releasing it to the Android Market.

i would love to try it out but i do not have a blue tooth adapter. I hope to buy one for my self after the holiday.

I do have shadow logger installed on my phone currently without any issues. followed the directions and got the results i wanted. Cool

i was wondering, in the future, would this be able to adjust ve tables based off of the afr tables (just like megalog viewer) That would be great and i wouldnt have to worry about the laptop unless i actually planned on some long tuning runs.

thanks for the program

Do you mean a VE Analyze from the phone? I do have a plan for that, server side VE Analyze on shadowtuner.com.

For tuning, I am working on another code base to be the tuning app. Shadow Logger I want to keep reasonably light and so it will run on about anything. It is a pretty simplistic program that didn't take very long to write compared to a real tuning app. The tuning version isn't that far off, but will only have some capabilities at first, then will grow from there.

ve analyze works too.. i just never got it to work well for me on the laptop. usually i do a log, load it in megalogviewer, and then update the controller with my new tune through tuner studio. that always got me the best results.

just being able to adjust things with android (like ve and spark timing) would be great.

Unless im not getting something. I can log with the phone (which is great!) but in order to have megalog viewer scan and adjust the VE table for me, ill have to use the laptop (which is also fine, being able to just look at data with the phone is sweet)

Probably, but I can't say for sure without trying one. I have bought bought 6 different BT Adapter during development and testing, I found most of them to work with most Android devices once you get it configured correctly, but they definitely have different personalities.
- Some are configure right out of the box to work well, you may just need to change the baud for your MS1 or MS2. Others do require changing configuration to turn off HW flow control, etc..
- Some connect much better than others. For some it seems like as soon as you request a connect, it connect right up, others will often take 5 or 6 connection attempts before successfully connecting.
- The read rate varies a good deal between them. The best of them will get twice the reads per second of the worst.
- Range varies, class 1 with antenna is typically preferred if you want good range.

A few that I have tested:
The Firefly - This has very simple setup, nothing needs to be changed except the baud. Performance is good, about 5-10% slower than the best tested, ok range. However, the one issue I have had is that it sometimes takes many attempts to connect. Sometimes it will connect right away, other times it will take 5+ attempt, just about the time I want to give up, it connects. I don't know why.

The GBS301 - Setup is not bad, performance is not very good though, it is one of the slower ones tested. Connectivity is bad. It seems only about half the Android devices tested were able to connect to it, ok range. I would avoid this one.

UCBT232EXA - Setup is a bit complicated, once working works well. Connects well. Good range. Read rate is Ok, about 15% below best.

I also went through several different samples from wholesalers. That is how I came across the one i sell on my site. It just worked very well, fast connection from all the OS's, the best throughput I have tested out of everything, very good range, a few configuration changes are needed, but I take care of that here. So I quickly decided to get some and be able to just offer an pre-setup and ready to use.

I managed to get my log uploaded to the Shadow Tuner site and then downloaded it to my laptop and it seems to work fine.
An ideots guide would have made it easier but I got there in the end :yeah!:

Oddly enough it is commonly more complicated to get Bluetooth working on the PC than on the phone.

This is sort of the wrong place to post PC Bluetooth troubles.

If you don't get it sorted, try a new post in the TunerStudio section and tell us what OS you are using and what is happening.

Awesome app - very nice job! It's logging great on my Acer Iconia A200 10.1 and the bluetooth adapter you shipped me.

Will there eventually be a way to upload a tune to ShadowLogger to burn to the ECU ( so I can eliminate my laptop entirely unless live-tuning )?

Thanks!

Actually that will be a different app, and no so distant into the future.
Since getting TunerStudio 2.0 out I have finally been getting time to work focused on Android, and am making goo progress.
