need some advice.

Hi,

I am an absolute newbie it the world of Megasquirt and have been looking on the internet to learn some more about the possibilities to use a megasquirt on my vintage volvo 144. Unfortunately there is so much information that it becomes rather confusing. So I hope there are some people here who can give me some advice.
What I've got: a volvo 144 with a 2 liter engine build n 1973. Normaly I use Liquid pertrol gas as fuel.
What I want: a system that controls the injection of gas in the cylinder. I don't want to tune the engine, I want to keep it simple. Also the ignition will stay as it is.

I know that I have to add a few sensors to the engine and I already made a triggerwheel and fitted a wideband lambda sensor. But which Megaquirt should I use?

Best regards,

Mathieu.

Use the MS board that you find is simplest. I run V2.2 Grippo boards in my once injected 2.2L Toyota truck. I first installed as a TBI system robbed from a Ford on the truck, I learned ALOT!

I would persuade you to use the 2.2 board MS1 as it is the simplest of the group, although the 3.0 board is really the same thing, just with more bells and whistles that you can add later if wanted/needed. Since your carb'd now too, a TBI (Throttle Body Injection) setup might be a better solution, the Air temp is in the TBI, as are the injectors, so you would need to install a H20 sensor under the thermostat and you already got the O2 situated, you just need to build the ECU (easy part) and a harness (what I am currently struggling struggle with).

I used a Ford TBI off of early 80 Mustangs, T-birds, and lincoln's, they used a Holley 500 bolt pattern and I could readily get an adaptor for these on my Toyota engine. Chevy makes TBI's too (V8 and V6's) but depending on your carb/location, different engines might supply bolt on or near bolt on TBI setups.

If you want fuel only Megasquirt control and are staying with the original ignition, you don't need a trigger wheel. You can get the tach signal needed from the coil.

Did later versions of your engine have factory injection? If so, the easy way would be to obtain an inlet manifold and plenum from one of those. If you can also get the injection wiring loom, that could be the basis for the MS one needed.

The snag with using an old design basic MS - like an MS1 v2.2 - is if you get the bug and decide to update other things at a later date. As you very likely will. :D It lacks many of the things that come as standard on an MS2 V3.

If you have any construction experience, I'd recommend you buy an MS kit and build it yourself. That will help you understand the basics of what it does, as well as saving some money.
