Optical triggering

Has anyone got an optical crank encoder working? Just curious - you could use a beam-interrupter setup to provide a nice clean digital signal with as many 'teeth' as you wanted within reason. The only issues i can see are dirt and maybe the wheel being brittle?

Just a top of the head thought, probably been addressed before but i cant see it in the search.

There are quite a few distributors with optical sensors in them. I personally prefer them.
An optical sensor isn't really suitable for out in the open as they will fail/false trigger with dirt etc. floating around. I think Hall effect sensors give a similar signal to an optical sensor, and aren't affected by dirt, oil etc so are more commonly used as a crank sensor.
