Coolant sensor....Can I use the one I have?.

Post by Jenko »

Just getting started on a Motorbike TB conversion on my 2ltr Ford CVH engine (fitted in a westfield kit car)....

Was wondering if I can use my current coolant sensor (that powers the temperature gauge) that resides in the head?.....I assume this is in the correct place with relation to the thermostat?....

Also, If I can use this, can I simply take another spur from the sensor?.

Thanks.

Paul.

Thanks Jim.....Currently, the car has no ECU (apart from Megajolt that controls ignition advance).......so, as I understand it, the sensor currently sat in the head of the car takes it's ground from the case, and simply has a 1 wire going back to the temperature gauge.....So, with Megasquirt install I was wondering if this can be reused?.....Although from what you say here, it seems not.....Is this because of the sensors location, or because of the sensor type?

You mention a resistor that needs removing...Is this required anyway?.

Is there a certain coolant temp sensor that is recommended....I'm in the UK, so not sure about which GM sensor to look at....

Thanks.

Paul.

Any coolant sensor will do if A) it fits B) you have some specs for it. Also, you can get '2 sensors in on' they have 2 or 3 terminals and actually have 2 separate sensors in the same body - maybe you can get one to suit your gauge and use the other for the MS. A VDO catalogue would be a good place to start - I think some VW and Audi models used these.
1984 Ford Falcon 250ci inline 6 MS'd of course!
