freezing after a few seconds

For discussing Phil Tobin's TunerStudio MS is the MegaSquirt edition of TunerStudio, a next generation tuning application. It provides the ability to configure and tune all MegaSquirt controllers and is 100% compatible with MegaTune ini files and msq's.

freezing after a few seconds

Post by convertables_10 »

My dash seems to freeze after only a few seconds. It also looses com way to easy. I cant even get it to start data logging to capture the issues im having with my ecm. I didnt start having issues until added my relays and fuse box.

Those problems sound related. If you are on 0.999.9, it will filter runtime reads that have corrupt data. This leaves the gauges stuck, and you are probably getting a computer beep.

Corrupt reads is typically what causes you to go offline too.

What are you using for a serial connection?

Are the relays anywhere near the MS? Does it seem to be resetting?

im on 0.999.9h. I did a disk check ans defrag on it last night. The ms unit doesnt seem to be resetting. Im using a usb to serial cable. I had a coil going bad and iy did the best thing it couldve done and quit. So i solved my run issues i was having. The relays are mounted on my heater box under the hood. Ill try it again today now that ive made changes.

I have the exact same thing on my lap top! Running ms2, v3.57 and TS v1.002.

Did you find a fix for the problem?

95% of the time it is a cable that isn't shielded well enough to keep out all the EM noise inside a car.

Do you mean the cable between the pc and the ms or just any other cable?

Yes, the cable between the MS and Laptop, usually a usb to serial cable.

Wrapped the cable in aluminum foil and grounded it! It seems to have done the trick! Before i did this, i lost connection after just 30 sec! Seems fine now! Thank you Phil!!!

I have this same problem. Weird thing is that I haven't had it until lately, when I began upgrading software. I am at 1.004. Can I send you my file Phil to look at it? I was thinking that my usb to db9 cable with sheilding could be the issue but why all of the sudden?

If you are still on 1.004 and it has just started recently, it sounds like something on your setup has changed.
- Make sure you are not getting any resets when it happens
- make sure a wire or cable wasn't damaged or bent especially if you have any custom wiring
- Solder coming loose?
- Also if something on your engine is causing significantly more noise like a broken plug wire.

hmm, well a couple minor changes come to mind. Not sure if they affect anything. I'm not getting resets nor any beeping noises. I get TS going offline and guages freeze after a few seconds.

1. I untaped the relay 85,86 style that I used to connect my MS to my GM DIS. The relay is on the pass side above the wheel well, where all the other MS wires come through the firewall.

2. I don't think that any spark wires are broken. I could need a isolation module, however why all of the sudden? I had no issues connecting to TS .999 and above etc in the beginning of the summer. No major setup changes or wiring overhauls. I discovered I had the thin alternator wire (volt regulator) touching a hot heater hose, causing that section of the wire to become hard, brittle and feeling however the casing is not broken and there is no bare wire exposed. Until I removed that wire from touching the hot surface, the car would not start once hot because it was giving the ignition circuit too much resistance, starter would make a click noise. Wondering if that wire is getting noise in the ignition signals.

3I have a cheaper ebay usb cord that has metal sheilding on it. I will try wrapping in Tin foil for the heck of it however, to help problem solve.

Thanks, I will try and snap some pics tomorrow or saturday and post. They may help.

One key question is: are you running 1.004 or a beta?

If on 1.004, then it is almost certain there is a problem some where in cables or wires, but if on a beta I really want to look at some debug files. There have been some people that are getting drip outs on the beta, and I am trying to nail this down.

I'm headed home and going to spend some qt in my garage trouble shooting this setup.

To answer your question, I downloaded from your link Phil how you instructed me to. I don't think that was Beta, however I don't remember creating a new project at the time, or maybe I saved over the last one because my new project name and original one are the same. When TS opens it does say 1.004.

More to come. TS is so exciting I can't wait to finish this little issue and get logging again!

Is there a certain distance that the coils need to be from the MS2 controller? I mounted my relays and fuse blocks right next to my controller to keep everything in one spot. I am close to completeing the install and have not tried to run it yet. Do I need to move my controller?
