Hall Effect Cam Sensor Mounting

Post by Rickd4004 »

I have the Red Hall Effect sensor that DIYAutoTune sells, that I want to use as a cam position sensor. The motor is a very small motorcycle engine and there is simply no way to mount the sensor to read a rotating target mounted on the cam.

The only way I can see to mount it is above a rocker arm, above one of the cam lobes. So rather than reading a target moving past the tip radially, the sensor would be reading a target moving toward the tip axially.

I did a simulated mock-up and at a slow speed (just a few rpm) it worked, does anyone have any idea if this set-up will work at high rpm? The motor revs to 10,000rpm

I am going to be using Microsquirt V3.0

Thanks
Rick

The position may not be very consistent when used this way, but if combined with a crank trigger it should work. The cam sensor would only be used for phase detection.
