I just bought a car with Megasquirt--unknown version

Post by helrazr70 »

I am a newb to Megasquirt or any stand alone management system.

The car has obvious driveability issues due to tuning and possible mismatched components.

The Megasquirt system is about 6 years old. Would that make it a MS1?

I have no paperwork, software, or info. The controller box is just a silver box in the glove compartment with no markings. I was just told that it was Megasquirt and that they think the original owner/builder used Megatune to tune it.

Where can I download the MS tuning software? I was told I could download it for free?

How do I get started?

Thanks!

Just above the start of this thread you'll find a red box. Click on the 'manual' link just under 'Forum Rules'. That has the information you'll need.

Tuner Studio is the latest tuning software, and can be downloaded for free. It is fully functional, but for a small fee you get even more functions. ;-) However, the free version will get you started.

If you take the lid off the MS box, you may be able to spot the version written on the board. If not, you can post a picture of the board and it shouldn't be too hard to identify.

I have been reading through the FAQs again and have found a little more info to determine what version I have. It looks like it is either printed on the board or it is judged by board color.

I am currently on a business trip to NYC. I will take the cover off when I get home and check it out. I had the car for a day before I left to come here. I drove it 4 hours to my home garage in the rain and that's all the experience I have with the car.

It as a 4cyl SOHC 2.6 Mitsubishi engine in a '89 Starion. It has been converted to MPI and it has a 284h cam, 1000cc injectors, AEM wideband O2, Aeromotive FPR, custom equal length stainless header, 3" exhaust, and a GT35R turbo along with a laundry list of goodies but it is a slug and poweress until 4500rpm. Even after 4500rpm it doesn't pull like it should. It is a slug and builds boost slowly ad is very laggy. It has a slight backfire/pop at 2200rpm under slight load such as being in 3rd gear at 30mph or 4th at 40mph. It almost feels as if the timing isn't advancing properly--and it's still running the factory distributor and ignition except for a MSD box and Blaster 2 EFI coil.

Along with being improperly tuned I think the cam isn't degreed properly, the turbo A/R is wrong, or the distributor/timing are off. The first thing I will most likely do is swap back to a stock cam and check timing.

In the meantime I want to be ready to check on the current tuning that is in the Megasquirt and see if it looks ok to a few folks I know locally and to others online that are willing to help. I would like to do some datalogging as well.
