Pertronix ignition setup w/ coil control

Post by usagoal »

1962 Buick Skylark, 215 v8, Land Rover multiport fuel injection system

I've been running v2.2 + Relay board with a Pertronix ignition that has been firing the coil (-) side for a few years now. I'm in the middle of building my v3 board(MS-II) and now I would like to double check/get some input about this new configuration I would like to try:

Pertronix ignition with coil control

1. So, the idea is that the Pertronix unit is basically a hall sensor. And:
a. Wires from Pertronix unit should be wired to pin 15(+) and ground(-) on the Relay Board?
b. Will I need to use a pull up resistor for the Pertronix unit?

2. The coil shall be connected to a switched 12v(+) supply (fuel pump relay).
a. This is different from v2.2 (12+ from switched ignition source)?
b. Couldn't I use my v2.2 coil(+) connection for v3.0 coil(+) connection?
c. The negative side of the coil should be connected to pin 11(-), which is S5, on the Relay Board. This should be my connection for coil control via the High Current Driver on the v3.0 board.

I figure I should sort out these questions and save myself countless hours of aggravating troubleshooting. I did search some of the posts for Pertronix setups but didn't really find anything about basic wiring. I hope this can be used to help other people who are trying to understand Pertronix ignition setup with coil control through megasquirt.
Is there any chance to get some of this info about Pertronix into the Assembly guide or Sensor and Wiring section of the MegaManual? It is in my opinion, a popular, easy, inexpensive option to points. There are megasquirters out there with older vehicles who want to convert points into something updated and controllable. Just thought I'd throw this out there and see what you guys think. Thanks.

Pretend the Pertronix is a set of breaker points. It does use a Hall sensor, but unless you cut the thing open, you won't get any access to it directly.
